AGE AND AMOUNT CHART

Definition

Age and amount chart is an underwriting tool that shows which medical requirements are needed for an applicant based on their age and the face amount of coverage requested. These charts specify thresholds for paramedical exams, blood and urine testing, EKGs, treadmill tests, and attending physician statements. As age and face amount increase, the level of required evidence typically becomes more extensive. Age and amount charts are created by each carrier and reflect their risk tolerance, mortality assumptions, and reinsurance requirements. They are essential to managing underwriting costs and turnaround times while ensuring that higher-risk, higher-benefit cases receive adequate scrutiny.

Common Usage

Advisors and case managers consult age and amount charts when designing applications to minimize surprises and prepare clients for required medical workups. For example, they can see whether a 62-year-old applying for USD 2 million of coverage will need a full paramed, labs, and an EKG, or whether accelerated underwriting may be available at lower face amounts. BGAs and new business teams use the charts to set expectations about cycle times and to coordinate mobile exam services. When multiple carriers are being compared, differences in age and amount requirements can influence which product is most practical for a given client. Understanding age and amount charts allows advisors to pre-qualify cases, avoid client frustration, and balance underwriting friction with desired coverage levels.
