Jon entered the life insurance profession in 1976, earning his first life insurance license in Florida while attending the University of Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1978 and shortly thereafter became licensed in Kentucky, beginning the next chapter of a career that would span five decades of extraordinary change in life insurance, medicine, financial planning and technology. The original Florida and Kentucky licensing dates are being documented through the respective state insurance departments.

Today, Jon serves as President and CEO of Shaw American Financial Corporation, a wholesale life insurance brokerage organization whose roots extend back to the formative years of independent life insurance brokerage.

What distinguishes Jon's career is not simply its length. Over five decades, he has worked through thousands of underwriting situations, helped financial professionals navigate difficult and unusual risks, participated in the design of sophisticated estate and business insurance cases, and delivered hundreds of professional training seminars on impaired-risk and advanced underwriting.

His career also spans virtually the entire modern technological evolution of the life insurance profession — from paper applications, printed rate books and calculations performed on a handheld calculator to personal computers, electronic illustrations, digital medical records, automated underwriting and today's use of artificial intelligence.

A SECOND-GENERATION LIFE INSURANCE CAREER

Jon followed his father, Irving H. Shaw, into the life insurance profession. Irving Shaw was an early advocate of independent wholesale life insurance brokerage. The idea was that an advisor should not be limited to one insurance company's products or underwriting philosophy when another company might provide a better solution for the client.

Shaw American's corporate history identifies Irving and Jonathan Shaw as founding participants in several influential life insurance brokerage organizations, including LifeMark Distributors, The Risk Appraisal Forum, Life Inc., and the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies (NAILBA).

Jon therefore did not simply observe the growth of independent life insurance brokerage. His professional career developed alongside it.

50 YEARS OF IMPAIRED-RISK AND ADVANCED UNDERWRITING

A major focus of Jon's career has been impaired-risk and advanced life insurance underwriting.

Impaired-risk underwriting involves applicants whose medical history, occupation, avocation, travel or other circumstances may cause an insurer to view them as presenting greater-than-average mortality risk. Shaw American became known within the brokerage community as “The Wonder Writers” for its work with difficult impaired-risk cases.
